JACOB OF PONT-SAINTE-MAXENCE
- JACOB OF PONT-SAINTE-MAXENCE
- JACOB OF PONT-SAINTE-MAXENCE (14th century), one
of the leaders of French Jewry. Jacob apparently came from
Pont-Sainte-Maxence, a town in the Oise department, northern France, but
his name is the only indication that a Jewish community existed there.
Along with manessier of vesoul , he controlled the affairs of the
Jews in the north, perhaps from the time of their return to France in
1359. After Jacob had quarreled with Manessier and denounced him to the
authorities, Manessier was compelled to pay a heavy fine both to Jacob
and to the king.
